John S. Marshall Insurance, located at 144 West Main Street, has been a fixture in the business district of St. Clairsville for nearly three decades. Housed in the basement offices of the same building for the first two years, the business moved to the street level in 1984, where it remains as the hub of the business's operation to not only provide insurance to their clients, but also to build a sense of community.
John says that his work to build a trust and a supportive relationship with his policyholders has led to those policyholders seeing him as a first line of help with many issues, even non-insurance ones. And he is happy to assist. He and his wife and business partner Sandy agree that customer service is always foremost to them and that they enjoy a loyal following from their customers as evidence of this focus on service. Sandy points out that when a policyholder has a claim, their relationship with their agent becomes vital in helping them through the claims process. John asks policyholders to call him directly when they have a loss and he will report the claim for them, explain the claims process, and let them know what to expect at each step along the way. Sandy says this level of service is important because today many customers don't particularly care to learn details about their insurance policy, they just want someone they can trust to be there to help them through the claims process if they need it. She also says that customers may be able to purchase insurance cheaper online, but they lose the personal contact with a local agent and will have to talk with many different people at 800-numbers when dealing with a claim. In contrast, not only is Nationwide "On Your Side", but so are John and Sandy.
Continuing on the theme of community, John says he believes it is good for businesses to support our area by being part of the Chamber of Commerce. He served as President of the St. Clairsville Area Chamber of Commerce in 1995 and continues to refer new members and explain to them the benefits and importance of membership. John is also active in the Rotary Club of St. Clairsville Ohio, the Belmont Mountaineer Athletic Club, is Vice President of the St. Clairsville Public Library Board of Trustees, and he and Sandy are active with Stone Presbyterian Church in Wheeling.
