In addition to providing nursing services to long-term residents, Cumberland Pointe Care Center has several specialties that make them stand out. The 98-bed facility also offers a respiratory unit, on-site dialysis, wound care treatment and a skilled-care unit.
The new skilled-care unit was just opened in January. It is an addition to the facility and includes 12 private suites and a therapy room which includes a heated pool for aquatic therapy. The unit offers short-term skilled care and intense rehabilitation including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Physical therapy helps residents improve joint range of motion and strength, occupational therapy increase gross and fine motor strength to improve the skills needed for self care, and speech therapy improves lingual strength, swallowing functions, and memory skills. Residents in the skilled-care unit receive therapy seven days a week up to three hours a day. Cumberland Pointe also offers these services as outpatient therapy.
On-site dialysis is provided in conjunction with Wheeling Renal Care, as one of the two satellite dialysis facilities of the main Wheeling Hospital location. As one of only a very few facilities of its kind in the area, they get referrals and take patients from throughout Ohio. The respiratory unit, which offers ventilator and tracheostomy care, is one of just a few in the entire country in skilled-care units. Because of this, they receive referrals from all across the country. Cumberland Pointe also specializes in various treatments for wound care for those with vascular or diabetic issues. They use whirlpool, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound treatments to facilitate wound healing.
Cumberland Pointe also organizes activities to keep residents engaged in fun while they are rehabilitating. Last summer the activity and therapy departments worked together to help residents grow a garden. They cleared the area, planted peppers, tomatoes, and a giant pumpkin. Residents tended the garden daily and the pumpkin was at the center of a number of events. Residents, staff and family members were on hand to watch the cutting, lifting and transportation of the pumpkin, and some residents followed it to the Pumpkin Festival to watch it weigh in at an amazing 753 pounds. After the festival, the pumpkin was returned to the center's courtyard where it was carved and decorated to become the centerpiece of the facility's fall decorations.
